    Kyphosis

Kyphosis — an excessive forward rounding of the upper back — can develop gradually through posture, osteoporosis, or spinal degeneration. It often causes upper back pain, fatigue from holding the posture, and in more severe cases, breathing or digestive discomfort. Virginia uses ASMI to mobilise the thoracic spine, reduce the muscle tightness that reinforces the curve, and help restore a more comfortable, upright posture.

    What you might notice

    • Exaggerated forward rounding of the upper back
    • Upper back or neck pain or fatigue
    • Difficulty standing or sitting upright comfortably
    • Reduced flexibility through the upper body
    • Shortness of breath in severe cases

    How Virginia can help

    • ASMI mobilises the thoracic spine segments to improve extension and flexibility
    • Reduces the tight, shortened muscles that reinforce the forward posture
    • A gentle, progressive approach that avoids overstressing the spine
    • Postural guidance to support the changes made in sessions
    • Improvement in comfort and mobility is the primary goal, with posture improving as a result

    Frequently asked questions

    Is kyphosis reversible?
This depends on the cause and severity. Postural kyphosis — often called 'poor posture' — can be significantly improved. Structural kyphosis (from osteoporosis or Scheuermann's disease) may not be fully reversible but can often be made much more comfortable. Virginia will assess your specific situation at the consultation.
Do I need to see a doctor before coming?
If your kyphosis is related to osteoporosis, Virginia will need confirmation from your GP that spinal therapy is appropriate. For postural kyphosis, no referral is needed.
How many sessions are typically needed?
Kyphosis usually requires a sustained course of treatment — 6–10 sessions is typical — followed by maintenance work. The more established the posture, the longer lasting change takes. Virginia will give you a realistic picture after your first assessment.
